The soul-rock band Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats have just released a new single “David and Goliath” off their upcoming fourth studio album, South of Here, set to come out June 28th.
The song reflects Rateliff’s inner dialogue and is an emotionally lyrical piece. He talks about changing from the person he used to be and finding a way to escape the things that internally hold him back. The raw and honest emotion in the song comes through to listeners.
Rateliff’s sings “These negative thoughts feel crazy/ but why should I even care/ I want to be different now.”
He has also further explained the meaning of tracks title which is a reference to tale about an underdog.
Rateliff says “Anxiety … the intense, excessive, and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations, feels to the person experiencing it as impossible of a battle as David slaying a giant.”
With The Night Sweats on piano and guitar the song has a grounded and consistent feel closing out with an electric guitar distorted riff. The rhythm captures a sense of defeat and discomfort in one’s self through a strong marching beat.
“David and Goliath” is the second release off the new album after their new song “Heartless.” Both songs tell intimate and personal stories of the singer’s thoughts and inner reflection creating further anticipation from fans that the remaining nine tracks will be equally as unconcealed.

Corvus Coffee Roasters X South of Here Coffee Blend
Their latest album, "South of Here," finds inspiration in Latin American and southern cultures, echoing the coffee choice for their tour—an El Salvadorian lot from the Pacas Family at El Retiro. Sharing this coffee with Nathaniel unveiled his deep interest in the farmers' narratives, underscoring the transformative power of passion in their craft. The saga of the Pacas Family, now led by Maria and Alfredo, embodies a legacy of pride and commitment, handed down through the ages. This naturally processed Sudan Rume, an intriguing coffee variety, yields exquisite flavors of Key Lime Pie, Raspberry, and a pristine Floral finish—a sensory voyage evoking summer evenings spent listening to soulful melodies.

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats have announced South of Here, the genre-bending Americana ensemble’s fourth studio album. Set to release on June 28 via legendary soul label Stax Records, the band’s first full-length offering since 2021’s The Future exudes the same sort of poignant, candid and hard-rocking storytelling that has earned the Rateliff widespread acclaim, exemplified by preview single “Heartless,” which shows the singer-songwriter at peak performance within a pitch-perfect sonic landscape opened by producer Brad Cook.
“Heartless” pours over with heart, testifying to Rateliff’s mastery of reflecting the knotty wholeness of life through personal narrative and sonic storytelling. In four tight verses, the bandleader winds through a trail lined with hardship and heartache to a clear and sunny vista, looking forward with renewed resolve and digging up tenderness from a hard place. The result is potent and inspiring, while remaining locked in Rateliff’s unique brand of gritty, anthemic blues-rock. This stunning picture develops under the keen eye of Cook–known for work with Waxahatchee, The String Cheese Incident, Bon Iver and more–who draws out a full, colorful arrangement that feels welcoming and warm as a home away from home.
“Brad was a great producer to write alongside,” Rateliff shares on the process behind the duo’s third collaboration. “This album is a look into my own struggle with anxiety, insecurity and also stories of my life. He encouraged me to take responsibility for my own narrative in the songs and to write about what’s happening in my own life,” Rateliff notes. “These recordings were done together in a room with my closest friends. I hope these songs and stories give you an opportunity to better understand your own struggles whatever they may be.”
