Summary:
This was a very special collection of bands -- Delta Spirit and Ra Ra Riot (who traded headlining spots all week), Nathaniel Rateliff, Free Energy and Pearly Gate Music -- and the only Barnstormer tour that kept the same lineup every night of the tour. It was filled with old friends and a couple of bands who had been buddies for a while as well.
We started the tour in West Liberty, Iowa, on a pretty perfect late spring night and then moved on to the first tour show we ever did in a legitimate venue, the always great Turner Hall Ballroom in Milwaukee. From there we ran into a strange snag, with the venue we were supposed to be using in Wisconsin pulled out from beneath us the night before the show by local authorities who had previously granted us permission to put the show on. We moved the show to the Walworth County Fairgrounds in Elkhorn, WI in the 11th hour and had a great night there -- playing Whiffle ball on the grounds pre-show.
We then traveled to what became our favorite new barn in Monticello, Ill., just outside of Champaign. Definitely the best night of the tour thus far and it's evident in the recordings that the bands were on fire. The final night in Maquoketa, IA, site of Codfish Hollow, the energy and performances were doubled from the night before, with numerous sing-a-longs and guest appearances in sets. This was the first tour that we ended here and now it's the rule for a reason.

This footage was taken in Chicago while we were recording In Memory of Loss. But the footage with all of us playing together, Was taking when we recorded Shroud for a second time at Engine Studios. The final live recording was what worked for us. We also recorded "This" and "Pounds & Pounds" that same weekend.
In Memory of Loss is a stunning, heartbreaking sonic document from a singer-songwriter who's made his way from a childhood in Bay, Missouri (pop. 60) to the national stage.

Nathaniel Rateliff stands in an old familiar place, sharing his pain. The Mercury Café is one of the first places Nathaniel frequented when he moved to Denver in 1998, hearing jazz, dancing, and eventually playing many shows there. For his Tiny Desk (home) concert, he's assembled a dozen players including a string section, backing singers, and some of his oldest friends: Joseph Pope III on bass, Mark Shusterman on keys, Luke Mossman on guitar and Patrick Meese on drums. On the opening song and the title track to his 2020 album, And It's Still Alright, they're restrained as Nathaniel sings about loss, including his friend and producer Richard Swift, but he's holding on. "I'll be damned if this old man / Don't start to counting his losses / But it's still alright."
But restraint lets loose on the chorus of "Redemption," a song about breaking free of the past and written for Apple original film Palmer, starring Justin Timberlake. The ender, a tune called "Mavis," truly is a grand finale, a song that conjures up images of The Band singing Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" — and what a fabulous release it is.

Nathaniel Rateliff took the world by storm with his hit song, “S.O.B.” and is now a household name. Before he was selling out multiple nights at Red Rocks Amphitheater, he was a janitor, trucker, and landscaper. When he put all his chips on the table to pursue music, it clearly paid off. Lance and Nathaniel sat down at the Skylark Lounge in Denver, which Nathaniel co-owns, to have a down-to-earth conversation about how he got here.

Music has been a crucial component of social movements throughout history. A thoughtful partnership of musicians, organizers, and activists can build a coalition that persuades audiences to action.
As we rebuild and come together once again, we look forward to this conversation that places emphasis on how - the careful considerations and thoughtful relationships that must be in place in order to build long-lasting, impactful justice movements.

Nathaniel Rateliff and his band The Night Sweats are on fire, with concerts that get feet moving and bodies swaying, fueled by rhythm and booze.
It wasn't always this way: In the past, Rateliff would be more easily described as a folk artist. When I saw him recently at a sold-out Sunday-night show in D.C., he expressed intense gratitude for the new audience that's found him. Much of that new crowd has embraced the big-band R&B of his new album, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, which was produced by Richard Swift and released on the legendary Stax Records.
The record and its songs embrace not only Southern soul, but also the rockier side of soul made famous by Irish singer Van Morrison. Here at the Tiny Desk, Rateliff's body-shaking tunes take on a slightly more laid-back sound, served with a warm heart and suitable for a cold beer.

“It’s been a couple years,” Nathaniel Rateliff observed from the stage, gazing out at the fan-filled hillside at Rock the Garden. “We’ve missed you all. We love you guys. It’s so good to be back.”
Rateliff hadn’t been in Minnesota since March 2020, when he was touring in support of his solo album from that year, And It’s Still Alright. Now back onstage with his full band The Night Sweats, Rateliff and company rolled out a passionate set of songs from all three of their albums, including their latest release, The Future. In the lead-in to “A Little Honey,” Rateliff was proud to remind the audience that that song’s video was filmed on location at the Turf Club in St. Paul.
In a notable change from earlier performances, Rateliff appeared hatless - a symbol, intended or not, of opening up his whole self to the audience, and they responded in kind. The evening proved a catharsis as the band and audience engaged in a dialogue they hadn’t enjoyed in more than two years: the band giving their all — including keyboardist and bandleader Mark Shusterman appearing to direct both band and audience — as the audience bobbed their heads, danced, clapped and thrust their hands in the air in a glorious reunion that included several instances of call and response. Later on, Rateliff repeated his earlier sentiment, telling the crowd between songs, “We thank you for all your years of support. We love you guys so much.”
Perhaps in one of the set’s most poignant moments, Rateliff held a microphone in his hands, standing at the lip of the stage, ostensibly singing to each and every person in the audience: “Just remember, I’m on your side.”
And there was no doubt the feeling was mutual.
